Read our storyA farm built from experience
Decades of mechanical know-how, years spent serving farmers, and a commitment to agricultural education are coming together in one carefully built local farm.
Meet the founder
Backwoods Mushroom Farms began with a simple idea: build something local, dependable, and worth passing down.
Founder Marc Harber has spent much of his working life around equipment, problem-solving, agriculture, and people who depend on the land.
After nearly 30 years in the HVAC industry, Marc moved into the agricultural equipment business. For the past six years, he has worked directly with farmers, selling farm equipment and tractors while gaining an even closer understanding of the daily realities of agriculture.
But Marc’s connection to agriculture began well before he started selling farm equipment. For approximately ten years, he worked with high school students through agricultural programs such as FFA. During that time, he helped students prepare and show livestock, learn greenhouse growing, and develop practical agricultural skills.
Those different chapters created the foundation for Backwoods Mushroom Farms. His HVAC background provided decades of experience with temperature, humidity, airflow, electrical systems, and mechanical equipment. His work with farmers strengthened his understanding of the planning and hard work required to operate a farm. His years with agriculture students reinforced the importance of hands-on learning and passing practical knowledge to the next generation.
Mushroom farming brought all those experiences together.
The farm will combine modern indoor growing methods with the traditional practice of growing mushrooms outdoors on hardwood logs. Inside the controlled grow house, the environment will be carefully managed. Outdoors, mushrooms such as shiitake will be allowed to develop naturally on locally sourced oak and poplar logs.
The farm is starting small and growing with purpose. Every crop will be an opportunity to learn and improve, and every customer relationship will matter. The goal is not to become the biggest mushroom producer. It is to build a trusted Georgia farm known for freshness, quality, honesty, education, and dependable service.
As the farm grows, Marc hopes it can become a place where agricultural knowledge and experience are shared. The same hands-on spirit that guided his work with high school agriculture students will remain part of the farm’s values: learn by doing, take pride in your work, and help prepare the next generation to carry agriculture forward.
Backwoods Mushroom Farms is being built one room, one log, one crop, and one relationship at a time—with patience, hard work, practical experience, and respect for the land.
This is only the beginning.
Modern control. Backwoods roots.
Temperature, humidity, fresh air, and light are carefully managed to create reliable conditions for specialty mushrooms.
Traditional outdoor growing on oak and poplar logs allows varieties such as shiitake to develop slowly and naturally.
Planned first harvests
Our first offerings will be shaped by successful growing trials and local customer demand. Availability will change with the season and each crop.
